February – American Heart Health Month

According to both the CDC and the American Heart Association, heart disease continues to be the number one cause of death in the U.S.; it is also largely preventable with some general education. Preventing heart issues through diet, exercise, not smoking, managing stress, and getting a regular check-up for blood pressure and cholesterol are all fairly simple and doable.

  1. Healthy eating habits like eating whole foods, cutting back on fat, checking your sodium intake, lots of fruits and vegetables, filling up on fiber, low-fat dairy products….. making healthier choices on a consistent basis.
  2. Stress reduction….. try some yoga, set aside some time to meditate, both of which can be considered as self -care for your heart.
  3. Get moving- take a walk, take the stairs, take charge of your heart health!  Every little bit of activity can help strengthen your heart!
  4. Check your numbers- regular blood pressure screenings should happen at least once every 2 years and then yearly after age 40. High blood pressure is a big risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol screenings should begin around ages 9-11. The recommendation changes with age. Women 45-65 should be screened every one to two years and people over 65 should be tested yearly.
  5. It is never too late to educate yourself and your loved ones and it is never too late to late to start a heart-healthy lifestyle. Implementing small changes each day can improve your heart health and your quality of life. Be sure to share this with your Valentine!
