October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

With every type of cancer, early detection provides the best chance for a cure. Doctors can often detect breast cancer before the disease has spread to other structures. Even if it has spread, quick detection increases the chance of long term survival.

People can perform the most basic breast cancer screening on their own: a breast self- exam. Done monthly, breast self exam can reveal small lumps.

A yearly clinical breast exam and regularly scheduled mammograms in middle age can often detect breast cancer in its earliest stages.

So schedule your yearly exams. Encourage your mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to do the same. Remember that breast cancer if found early is highly curable; so it’s important to get screened, reduce your risk, and talk to your health care provider about your health history.
